In the Acrylic Painting Class students will develop an understanding of how color works and can be applied through the use of acrylic paint.

A)  Students will learn about color theory.   Issues of color will be explored, along with value and intensity.

B)  Students will complete an image which creates the illusion of depth across specific geometric shapes.

C)  Students will explore acrylics through the following list of subjects:

                                      Portrait

                                      Still Life

                                      Wild Life

                                      Abstraction

                                      Landscape

D)  Students will create a semester final which is to highlight the best of their abilities.

The following is a list of painting assignments which may be included in the semester  :

Color Wheel

Students will create a color wheel, demonstrating their previous knowledge of color.   Their image is to organize, colors used will need to be arranged in the correct order and sequence.  All colors are to be correctly named.

Issues of Color Mixing Control

Intesity strips...  The Students will blend light and darks.  It is important to understand that control of changing a color tint or tone begins with lighting or darkening a color.  When mixing two colors the lightest color always needs to be introduced first, the darker of two colors is added second.  This is true if issues of value or intensity are being addressed.

2-Sided Geometric Shapes

Using issues of intensity and values the students will apply a common light source, painting the following simple geometric shapes;  Cone and Cylinder.

It is important the the change in intensity or value is gradual and reflects the surface of the geometric shape.  The students goal is to create an  image of these shapes that is 3-dimensional in appearance.

The Sphere ~A Geometric Shapes

Using issues of intensity and values the students will apply a common light source, painting the Sphere.

Still Life ~Value

Using issues of values the students will apply a common light source and a single color to paint a simple three object still life.

It is important the the change in value is gradual and reflects the surface of the geometric shape.  The students goal is to create an  image of these shapes that is 3-dimensional in appearance.  An accurate pencil drawing is required before painting begins.

Still Life ~Intensity

Using issues of intensity the students will apply a common light source and a single color to paint a simple three object still life.

Full Color Still Life

The students will create two image of the same or similar still life.   The first is to be completed demonstrating a monochromatic use of color.   The second is to be completed using believable realistic color scheme.  Both image are to accurately demonstrate a common light source moving across the objects in the still life.

Wildlife

The students will complete one wildlife painting.  The image can be a portrait.  The students are to work from a good photograph.  This image the students are allowed to apply the color scheme of their choice.   This image is to be believable and realistic.  Shape and details are very important.

Portraits

The students will complete a set of portraits.  One will be a monochromatic image.  The second is to be done with true believable color.

Issue of Pointillism

Pointillism is addressed.  This is done beginning with simple shapes and end with a students working image of real man-made objects.  Shape, Details and Light source...

Self Portrait

Each Student will work on their self portrait.  The portrait is to be a serious effort, focusing on capturing a likeness.  Knowledge of portrait drawing skills are reviewed.  

Two self portraits will be created.  One will focus on natural, believable colors.  The second self portrait the students may choose a specific color scheme.

All portraits are to focus on demonstrating a common light source and accurate shape.
