In Sculpture Class students will prepare a series of images, which will explore a variety of dimensional issues.  This is a challenging class, in that the process of exploration will include a variety of Sculptural Techniques.  We will explore both subtractive and additive sculptural processes.  The materials used may include plaster, clay and soap stone.

Drawing skills will be utilized, as the students will need to prepare detailed drawings for all sculptures that are assigned.  At times students will need to visualize an image from many views and be able to draw that viewpoint.

POSSIBLE PROJECTS / WORK REQUIRED

A) Students will work on shallow relief study, using a one thick sheet of carving form.

B)  Students will floral foam blocks and casting plaster to create small self-standing sculpture in the round and high relief studies.

C)  Students will small soap stones and learn how to carve with chisels and mallets.

D)  Students will use clay to construct a small ceramic bust.

E)   Students will learn to make simple molds and carve from blocks of carving plaster.

Subtractive Carving

Small positive sculptures are carved out of soap stone.  The stone is soft enough to carve, but still challenging in that it requires knowledge of chisel and mallets.

Shallow Subtractive Relief

Working on dense carving foam that is only 3/8 inch thick the students will create a small shallow relief of a known animated comic strip character.  The background is lowered revealing the subjects silhouette.  The students will work across the subject determining what is high and what is low.   This sculpture is sanded and painted.

High Subtractive Carving

The emphasis of this sculpture is shape.  The students will remove all negative space exposing the small grouping of block letters.

Theatrical Masks

Students will design a high relief mask.  This mask is a constructive sculpture, assembled with casting plaster, paper and masking tape.  Two drawings will need to be completed before the sculpture is started a front and a side views.

Clay Sculpture in the Round

This is a sculpture which must be successful from all perspectives.  Students will need to complete three images, assembling an orthographic set of drawings.  These drawings are to include the Side, top and front views of the object they intent to create.

This clay sculpture is to be completely hollow.

The clay thickness is to be of a consistent thickness.

Something Whimsical  cheeky

The students have the choice of materials.

This can be subtractive or an additive sculptural process.
